It was a BUG in the HP software. If you are having problems with "lpr" to an HP I highly recommend getting the patch or waiting for system 8.0. Thanks to Kimmo in Finland for pointing this out. (I wish HP would let their customers and engineers know about these patches. HP is great, but sometimes this kind of thing can be irritating.)
