I also saw the same ads when I was shopping for a modem.  However, one of my 
requirements was that the modem have a speaker for monitoring
the progress of the dialing/signal acquisition process, and neither of these 
modems had one.  I ended up buying a Zoom send FAX modem from
Software that Fits for $119.  It took four days to arrive, and works great 
(although I have to admit that the FAX software is not the greatest, but it 
does the job!)  For my money, the Hayes 
isn't worth the cost, and the Zoom does everything I want it to.
