I'm interested in purchasing a reasonably powerful page layout program. Looks like I've narrowed it down to PageMaker and XPress based on popularity and price. I'm not a professional, but I am involved in some organizations that need flyers and such done. I intend to use a scanner to create B/W lineart and grayscale TIFF images to be used in my work. Most things will end up on normal letter sized paper. I'd like pretty good control over text (I've heard I should get Illustrator for this. Next big purchase perhaps.) My system is a IIci with Apple's portrait display monitor. I have a DeskWriter (with ATM) which I'd like to use if possible, but I do have access to LaserWriters if I need to use one. In any event, do you have recommendations about either or both of these programs especially with the hardware setup I have?
