We have upgraded to SunOS 4.1, and had no trouble with any of the X
utilities at all.  Prior to doing that, however, we also installed
Motif 1.1.  Part of the process of upgrading to Motif 1.1 was
installing the infamous 14 X patches, as well as a Motif patch that
has been submitted to the X consortium.  If you have not installed
those patches, perhaps you should try it.  Good luck.
