You are in luck concerning your frined's VersaBraille needs. I've used various models of the VersaBraille during the past several years! I must confess that I'm using my IBM compatible to access the echos and bs's, but the VersaBraille can definitely be used with a modem. It would be helpful to know which model he has. Does the machine use cassettes or disks? You don't have to have a modem specifically designed for the VersaBraille, but you do need the RS232 serial cable from Telesensory Systems Inc. There are terminal programs for both the cassette-based and disk-based VersaBrailles. If you have additional questions, feel free to ask!
