This is because you didn't look hard enough, you dolt!  

The hacks have been done, and are included in the B News sources (even
though it's not mentioned in the documentation or manual pages, or in
visual.c or virtterm.c, which were the only source files I checked...)

Was it painfully obvious that I don't use B News anymore? :-)
