(At least the commercial version does.) If I understand what you're saying, you need to use gatewaays into RDBMS systems from more than one verder, in which case you need to look at their "gateway" products too. CMU has a little experience in using the distributed product at present. My systems (telecommunications/accounting) use STAR to link equipment and call detail data bases for accounting purposes. The new system we will start writing soon will make far more extensive use of distributed data bases and processing techniques. There are probably others out there who can contribute to this discussion. For the sake of sanity, I would like to propose that comments come from folks who've actually done something with a DDB. It might help keep the signal to noise ratio reasonable.
