  OOPS.  Don't try this.

  This will make the following changes:

  charlie!baker
    -> charlie!able!baker
    -> charlie!able!able!baker
    -> charlie!able!able!able!baker

etc.  Eventually you will get an error message.  At the very least, you
must put a '$:' on the RHS.
