I've had very good luck with an Everex 2496 modem.  It does 2400baud
and does MNP5.  I managed to pick it up for aro $250 plus shipping by
studying Computer Shopper.  I don't think Everex will go under next year.

Oh, it also includes 9600 baud fax send & receive, too...
