The show paragraphs being on or off should be stored in the file found in the system folder called "Word Settings (4)". If you choose "hide paragraphs" (command-Y) and then quit from Word, the next time you start up the paragraph markers etc. should still be hidden. It sounds like the settings file is not being saved for some reason; maybe you should check that people are quitting from Word rather than simply turning the machine off when done word processing. I've found that some users, particularly those who have come from DOS, don't know about the importance of choosing "quit" and "shutdown" when they finish working.
