I've found that "soft" partitions like that included in SUM do the job in this case. Indeed, SUM Partition creates a hidden file in the root folder of a hard disk that even the finder can back up. I dont know if this work will work for you, but i've used it upon occasion (usually until I find an un-copy-protected concurrent).
