I believe that the 615A is a tape designed for software
distribution where the whole capacity of a 6150A is not needed.
As far as I know, it is identical to the 6150A except that it
contains only 1/10th as much tape. The symptoms you describe
sound more like a cpio vs tar problem than one with the tape
itself.
