Thanks to all those who have replied regarding this problem.  Indeed,
despite the companies reports, the tape is a tar tape and is quite
readable with tar.  So, unfortunately at my phone expense, the
documentation from the company should now read correctly for the
next person.  Another sad tale......   ;-)
