Hi netters

I am having problem with BibTeX.  After running:-

%latex btxdoc

%bibtex btxdoc
This is BibTeX, C Version 0.99c
The top-level auxiliary file: btxdoc.aux
The style file: plain.bst
Database file #1: btxdoc.bib
"Leslie Lamport" is a string literal, not a function, for entry latex-manual
while executing---line 729 of file plain.bst

while executing---line 729 of file plain.bst

The resulting "btxdoc.bbl" file is incomplete as a result of the "errors".
Could the problem lie with the contents of "plain.bst"?  line 729 of
file "plain.bst" is the command: ITERATE {presort}.  All the errors have
something to do with the ITERATE commands.
Any help is much appreciated.  Thanks.
