This is a copy of an article I posted to some other news-groups
on the Internet. But after that I got an hint from a friend that it
really was a newsgroup for A/UX. So, if you already have had this discussion
in the meeting, please do excuse, and forward the solution to me.

I have an idea of minimizing the root-partition on A/UX 2.0
to give possibilities for ordinary users to have local root
and swap on their 80MB HDSC without missing the whole Mac partition.

Therefore I am trying to move as many files as possible from
/bin and /etc to /usr/bin and /usr/etc, but where to stop?
There is also a big /Mac directory... Is really all that
necessary for a A/UX boot? I am trying to trace all programs
used in the startup-scripts (starting by tracing /etc/inittab)
and move all others to /usr and create soft links.

My idea is also to mount /usr using NFS from a larger mashine, just
after mounting /, so I'm prepared to ALWAYS need a connection to that
NFS server. I also know that I must have that server in single-user mode too!
The only target is to really minimize the root on a local disk.

I'm also prepared to rewrite some of the scripts, i.e. assuming you have
a perfect /etc/HOSTID etc (no configuration errors allowed!).

Before digging deeper into the jungle of scripts run when booting
(just think of /etc/startup.d/* or what the name of the files was)
I want to ask if sameone else have tried this?

I want to run NFS, DNS, Yellow Pa..(Oops ;-) NIS, sendmail etc, so
there must be a proper initialation of all devices.
