The Rand McNally catalog has a picture of the "D" Booster Car Battery Charger. It gives dimensions as 12"x18"x1.5" which is enough space to hold at least 12 D batteries or about 24 amp hours. The idea is to trickle charge your car battery, not to run your car off D cells, so melting wires and internal resistance isn't a problem.
