You clearly informed and intelligent I guess my rule of thumb is if you are concerned enough to ask you should be tested. I would not go untested if I knowingly was stuck with an HIV+ needle and I would be concerned. However, I don't think that the intent was ever to spout meaningless statistics -- there has been a flurry of messages about what are the risks of this act... -- and I am sure that the response you found so impersonal came from within this context.
