This sounds like a problem I encountered.  `tr' takes different switches under
System V.  Change the line:

(defvar ispell-filter-hook-args '("-cs" "A-Za-z" "\012")

to:

(defvar ispell-filter-hook-args '("-cs" "[A-Z][a-z]" "[\012*]")
