ThereUs a discussion starting in this digest which seems headed toward developing a RscorecardS comparing many of the currently available products. I think everyone will benefit if the community creates a such a yardstick. However, in an interest in getting our site moving, and at the great risk of oversimplification, IUd like to get a sense of whatUs out there. So far, I can see three groups of products: 1) the PC-based monitors (wollongong, the recently announced novell one, etc), 2) the NyserNet/PSI monitor, and 3) a large number of commercially available, UNIX based monitors (often from router vendors). IUve separated 2 and 3 because the NyserNet package is available to universities for approximately 1/10 the cost of the packages in category 3. The question is -- are there any generalizations which can be made about each of the categories? can the PC-based packages handle a large campus sized network? are there major problems with the NyserNet monitor that the packages in category 3 have corrected? Any info and experiences would be appreciated.
