re: removing the battery from the 128K RAM card
  
To preserve memory in the RAM card when removing/changing its battery,
the RAM card must be installed in the 48 (which yours was) and the 48
must be turned on (which yours wasn't, apparently).  I believe the
48 only powers the RAM cards when it is turned ON.  Somebody please
correct me if I'm wrong.    steve thomas
