"would assume that the various sound drivers for the new microphone are

I just downloaded 6.0.7 lastnight, and poking in the System with ResEdit
reveals an AppleSoundInput DRVR. (I asked for the Mac IIci installation, so
I guess that means that the driver makes it into even machines that don't
have built-in mics.)
