If you just have one in the standard configuration, then everything works automatically and you don't have to bother about multiple swapfiles. The main advantage of having one partition is that you don't have to think about how much space you want to use for swap space, /tmp or other files. As soon as you make partitions for other reasons than the /client that is used by NeXT, you have to think about these things.
