The subject line gives tha basic question.

We have not YET upgraded our TeX package to 3.0 (or any other virtual
font scheme).  Can I still compile and use Tom Rokicki's dvips (5.395)
or should I put that off until after the upgrade of the rest of the system.

In other words, does the lack of virtual fonts in my TeX mess things up?
