There's an excellent quick summary to running Metafont in Liam R. E.
Quin's posting Definitive list of all fonts available for Metafont.

There should also be some documentation with the MF sources (not prominently
located I know).

There are makefiles and scripts for generating the whole set of fonts.

I'm sure that there are other sources of info out there.

Maybe some of these should go into the FAQ answers?
