The /etc/passwd of aux.support.apple.com shows:
  ...
  apple::999:900:A/UX Public Login:/:/bin/csh
  aux::999:900:A/UX Public Login:/:/bin/sh

But the login as 'apple' or 'aux' without a password
was not allowed.

Do you have a shadow passwd ?
