The window with the focus gets the darker pixmap (i.e. better 3D) visual, and the window with out focus gets a lighter pixmap. You can change the apperance via the following resources: Mwm*backgroundPixmap: 50_foreground Mwm*activeBackgroundPixmap: 25_foreground Mwm*topShadowPixmap: Mwm*activeTopShadowPixmap: Mwm*activeBottomShadowPixmap: (there are more...) Essentially there are resources for active (window with focus) and other windows (inactive). Pixmaps can have the value background, foreground, or %%_foreground (where %% are in increments of 25%).
