This seems like a pretty weak point in the whole scheme. Current and foreseeable space technology will require continual maintenance to stay operational. In this respect I am talking about manned vehicles, not small probes. Shuttle experience and the Fisher-Price report on the space station indicate that we could not keep a reusable orbital transfer vehicle or moon lander in operation long enough to justify being called reusable.
