We are running SCO Xenix on a PC/AT clone, using the uucp software as
distributed by SCO.

I am trying to copy a file from a remote site using uucp, but when I try
to run a command of the form:
uucp uunet\!host\!/usr/spool/uucppublic/file file
it responds with:
syntax  error uunet!host!/usr/spool/uucppublic/file 

As far as I can tell from the man page this is perectly legal.
What am I doing wrong? And how do I fix it?
