CVSD stands for Continuously Variable Slope Data.  It stores the
difference betfeen each sample, and was an encoding technique used in
communications and telephony some time ago.  There should be some
articles in old issues of IEEE Engineering or the AES Journal, RMIT
has back issues. If I see anything on CVSD in my own papers I'll let
you know.
