I would like to thank everyone who responded to my orginal post.

Parapharsing myself:

Here is what I learned:
	1. MSDOS an ROM BIOS does not support serial ports.
	2. The standard C FILE* does not work on serial (bi-directional)
           communications
	3. The best solution is to use communication libraries
	   Check SIMTEL20.

Also thanks to Frank Whaley (few@quad1.quad.com) who sent me
code for an interrupt driven i/o package.
