A compression device ?  That's an idea.  What about a set of compression
routines in a shared library ?  Think of programs such as hard disk backup
programs, a shell for archiving etc programs that being able to the most up to
date archive algorithms by simply getting a new library...  Not to mention that
it is easier to write such programs.
