It's important to get a good electrical connection between the motherboard and the "fingers" on the card. Other than that, you said that the system test comes out OK and the cards are OK (did you test them in someone else's computer?). That being the case, I can't think of anything else that might be wrong, other than some motherboard failure--maybe the cards don't get power, for example.
