Apple has the 'Apple // Workstation Card' or words to that effect; it's a Localtalk adapter for the //e. It DOES exist; my wife's school upgraded about a dozen //e's so they could be served (along with four //GS's) from their one Mac. Go prod your nearest dealer; cost as I recall her mentioning was around $150, though that is probably after school discounting.
