Somebody did write an HP-28 program for controlling common household equipment via infrared signals. No, it does not require that the calculator be two inches from the device. Apparently the receivers on most VCRs, televisions, et cetera are significantly more sensitive than the calculator receiver; mine worked from 10 feet away. -- edp
