I'm looking to buy two low-end laptops/notebooks/portables.  What
are the favorites, what is now on the market, and what do the 
future hold?

I'd be looking to spend @$1000 for both machines.  They need at least
one 3.5" drive (preferably high-density).  Everything else is trivial.
