  This is because your machines lack the Apple Sound Chip.  I believe this
pop doesn't occure on machines with the ASC.

  You need a special driver to make calls to the new Sound Input driver.
The LC and IIsi have the Microphone file which does this.  I believe that
Farallon is working on such a driver for the MacRecord.  (It might even
be done already.)
