Anyone know if there is some way to place floats (figures and tables)
that span both columns in twocolumn mode at the bottom of the page?

According to the LaTeX users manual it is "Not possible for double-column
figures and tables to be placed at the bottom of the page in two-column
format." (p. 176)

Any workarounds for this?
