See the APA guidelines for the use of nonsexist language (1977).  
These are distributed by Usenix to authors, speakers, and program
chairs.  See also the Chicago Manual of Style, where the use of
sexist language and unnecessarily gender-specific pronouns is
considered "infelicitous."
