The SHAPE extension is an MIT X Consortium Standard; as with all of them it
has complete (well, mostly complete) documentation for both protocol and C
library interface.  You'll find it on the R4 tape in
mit/doc/extensions/shape.ms, or (if you want postscript), in
mit/hardcopy/extensions/shape.ps.Z.
