I don't think anyone has mentioned Fighter Pilot Syndrome. Fighter pilots believe to a man that their planes must be as fast as possible, as pretty as possible, and as noisy as possible. The A-10 loses on at least the first two requirements. And fighter pilots grow up to be generals, and generals pick the planes for the next generation of fighter pilots.
