Put more precisely, the only 9600 or faster modulation scheme
supported on the T1000 and Plus is PEP.

The Plus serial interface can clock at up to 19200.

   ...and your Multitech modem won't be able to talk to them.

Should work fine at 2400 + MNP5 (if the MT has it) which should yield
around 4500bps throughput, but not at 9600 or better.
