One of my Usenet news feeds became stuck while its owner was out of town. No cause could be found until he got back in town and listened to the call. The modem was on his phone line and the dialer disabled call waiting prior to the call. When the local telco removed call waiting his mode began getting an intercept and a 'your call cannot be...' message. Strange - why couldn't they just ignore it? Seems to me that would be a better solution than the intercept (better yet to return to dial tone.)
