Well, thanks to the people who responded (quickly!) I have solved my memory
problem.  It appears that the attributes of the added memory blocks _were_
incorrect.  

If anyone owns a BASEBoard memory expansion with a revision 1.2 Gary 
daughterboard, feel free to send me mail if you have problems with it...

BTW, I would like to publicly thank the person who hit upon the solution:
