casehm is the file type used by DSEE (The Domain Software Engineering
Environment).  You will not want to allow anything other
than DSEE to write these files.  I suspect they can be read OK
with normal UNIX calls that go through IOS (the I O Switch), 
just as you can read a casehm file using the Read key.  You actually
aren't reading the casehm object, but rather other files pointed to 
by the casehm object.
