That is *JUST* how extended memory is often used on so-called AT clones! For example, an AT&T 6286 I sometimes use has a little over a million characters of random access memory. Unaided MS-DOS recognizes 655 000 characters of that. The machine is configured to use 131 000 characters of the remainder as "shadow RAM" for storage of read-only memory routines and video RAM. Windows/286 has drivers for using the extended memory as if it were normal memory, and/or as a disk cache. Now the question is: Will utilities that allow use of extended memory on other machines work on Rainbows? A side note: Note that all Rainbows have static RAM for use as shadow RAM of non-volatile memory. - --- Opus-CBCS 1.12 * Origin: Glacier Peak Rainbow, Bellevue, WA - 206/644-8431 (1:343/3.0) ------------------------------ Date: 10-27-90 (09:22) To: ALL Subject: REGIS From: PATRICK FINK My Rainbow has the color option, but some programs call for REGIS, what is it? Where do I get a copy. -pat - --- Opus-CBCS 1.12 * Origin: Silver Bullet - Silver Spring, Md - 301-622-2247 (1:109/417.0) ------------------------------ Date: 10-28-90 (08:17) To: DAVID MAROUN Subject: RE: EXTENDED MEMORY OA From: GEORGE THEALL DM>Now the question is: Will utilities that allow use of extended memory DM>on other machines work on Rainbows? David, please note that "extended" memory in the area of PC compatibles has a rather specific meaning - memory whose addresses lie above 1024KB (ie, 1MB) - and as such requires a 286 or better. As I don't believe the memory board from SS requires a 286, I doubt it contains so-called extended memory. Keep this in mind in your search and it will likely be less frustrating.
