This manual, also called DIL, has a large section with examples on "Controlling the HP-IB interface." This information applies to both 300 and 800 series systems, with dependencies in the rear of the manual. There may also be information in the hpib man pages on the system on the ioctl calls available for hpib. (DIL uses the ioctl calls, so it will be a bit slower then using them directly.)
