Looking at the 8087, 80287, and 80387 data sheets indicates that it is not possible to do this over the ISA bus. However, I see no reason from a system-level standpoint why an adapter which plugs into the CPU socket would not work. The problem is trying to find a way to package-up such a beast so that it plugs into several different systems; I think that scared off potential manufacturers.
