I'd be surprised if this problem was caused by your hard disk - However, I wouldn't be surprised if you have caused serious - i.e. irreparable - damage to your drive by banging it hard. The problem is probably a poorly seated controller card or drive connection. The reason the problem cures itself when you take the drive out is that at the same time you reseat the offending connection.
