I've seen it happen with several St-138's and ST-251's. The problem seems to be (at least from what I was able to get out of the Seagate techs) that the drives heads actually stick to the platters. Lubrications is apparently difficult without affecting the media. The fix seems to be: don't turn off the machine! They don't make that much noise. As to Toshiba drives being more reliable, it's been my experience that Toshiba drives don't have a spin-up problem because they crash before they're old enough to develop spin-up problems. (I'm not trying to slam Toshiba here...mearly saying that I've had a couple of bad experiences with their drives.) Opening a drive in a normal office environment WILL kill it, even if it's only open for a few seconds. Quimby (quimby@rpitsmts.bitnet, quimby@mts.rpi.edu)
