It's called NetChess, and while it's primarily for AppleTalk network use, it comes with a special configuration file which supposedly lets you play the game without a network hookup. Two warnings: 1. It's shareware, not freeware. Sorry, this was all I could find. (I am still looking.) 2. Since I don't know the game of chess, I can't say how well the game works overall. (I got it only because others have asked for it.) In about two minutes I'm going to shuttle a copy off to the sumex/ INFO-MAC archives, so you'll all be able to get it.
